Let There be Sunshine!

After days of cloudy dreary weather, we actually have sunshine!  It's like a warm tonic that my body needs.

I am so far removed from the natural rhythms of the earth and weather that were such a part of my life while growing up.  As a farmer's daughter, we had real connections with the earth and weather.  They weren't just  abstract ideas or theories.  I do know that my parents could read things from what was going on around them.  It was an accumulation of knowledge gained through years of close existence with the earth.  It was survival.
In the spring while Daddy was plowing, the earth smelled so good and you simply could not resist the impulse to take off your shoes and just walk barefoot in that damp, cool earth.   It felt right.

There are times when I would like to try to recapture that closeness to the earth and let the natural rhythms dictate my life rather than the artificiality that now surround so many of us in this "modern" world.  I miss those remembered connections.

Y'all take care.

  1. Reconnecting with the earth is probably a major part of why you love tromping through the terrain to photograph or chart birds. Gets you away from the modern and back to the timeless. Plus they're cheerful, energetic, sing nice songs and there's always something new to learn about them. :) We had a flock of blackbirds swarming our ground around the feeders before the T-storms this evening. They ate so furiously, like they knew the storms were brewing and they'd need some energy.

  2. We did the same thing as kids growing up. The rich dark earth felt so warm as it squished up through my toes. Nice memories and nice post today!

  3. It's been so long since I walked in fresh tilled soil!

And the smell of the earth! The only thing better in outdoor smells is fresh mown grass.

  4. Hellooo!!!
I used to plow!!! Haha we had to practice a lot in school, and i never got it really right, but i liked it anyway!

And i just saw your post about the quilts and i RUN into the guest bedroom and LOOKED at the WONDERFUL gift i got last week and though OH MY!!!! This is YOU!!!!

Thank you sooooo much i absolutely LOVED it! it is hanging in the guest bedroom on the wall (my mother in law loves quilting and she stays in that room all the time) so i thought it would be fun for her too!

Thank you! and Big BIG hugs

    1. Leontien, I'm so glad to hear it arrived safely. DH mailed it and didn't get a delivery confirmation! Hope you and your mother in law enjoy it.

  5. We had sunshine and a spring-like weather for a few days Here in Italy and now it's getting cold again. :( that second picture is wonderful! Was that taken in Florida? The only farms I've seen in Fl are horse farms in Ocala and I am looking forward to seeing other kind of farms too. anyway, thanks for the email! :)

  6. Ah, fresh dirt. I think that's why I like playing in the flowerbed. I don't have the greenest thumb, but the process feels so good. :)

  7. I know exactly what you mean about that connection with the earth. And I think it's just part of our human nature to long for it.
