Who knew way back in March that we would all be hunkering down at home, cutting out travels, foregoing hugs and generally becoming hermits? We spent last January in Arizona near Phoenix where I did considerable birding, adding to my life bird list, visiting with family members and friends, and enjoying the sunshine. </span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUq9Fdp3DRl723g8Bkx1rqWXE45phkanbWHm6BvIZjO6hNuTc8sKjBTe6Mn-o8tPMYNmQtFgae4JJ9fy9j81FJcXD-mhNqQqHq19pYu-fCCh2jtZdKPLVktq8_Aiz2c429De0spZZLbtgj/s540/DSC_0014+%2528Small%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="540" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUq9Fdp3DRl723g8Bkx1rqWXE45phkanbWHm6BvIZjO6hNuTc8sKjBTe6Mn-o8tPMYNmQtFgae4JJ9fy9j81FJcXD-mhNqQqHq19pYu-fCCh2jtZdKPLVktq8_Aiz2c429De0spZZLbtgj/w400-h355/DSC_0014+%2528Small%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Burrowing Owls</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: times; font-size: x-large;">On our way home we went to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon where I had never been. </span><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4cgrm-FVnXtKn73v7vParGjPgfQbQkNMpHBZsr9syPU4IaHvREZk2YSyiAAsHBivBR1RyMfbZtVEwssZJZXpR5C_-3dVPK2Oi2AHuvL0C1Pgi-lEZpLsWpYOYgtTsg-53DYfORauxll0W/s640/IMG_0625+%2528Small%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4cgrm-FVnXtKn73v7vParGjPgfQbQkNMpHBZsr9syPU4IaHvREZk2YSyiAAsHBivBR1RyMfbZtVEwssZJZXpR5C_-3dVPK2Oi2AHuvL0C1Pgi-lEZpLsWpYOYgtTsg-53DYfORauxll0W/w400-h300/IMG_0625+%2528Small%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: times; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: x-large;"> Then we detoured to Socorro, NM to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. </span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6NxCmhMMXDaiKH7Oru-SaS6cvWm_KF1-8Sj7cJbvMx03jIH2gBs3et2glufiuT5wwW1ZRdVZdReFwwkcPsK_FPbmFdEIlVlFlNpLLuPlci6faGRCHVAf8TIXkT-te7A0www85vZNa2hfi/s706/DSC_0034+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="706" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6NxCmhMMXDaiKH7Oru-SaS6cvWm_KF1-8Sj7cJbvMx03jIH2gBs3et2glufiuT5wwW1ZRdVZdReFwwkcPsK_FPbmFdEIlVlFlNpLLuPlci6faGRCHVAf8TIXkT-te7A0www85vZNa2hfi/w400-h272/DSC_0034+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sandhill Cranes coming in for the night<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1HlD30Zln4wzRsCCYE8ip7EcfJaveGo5Kyl_v9CdGM1CLEzEgQ2lbRX7aw-3As2GpzR6VJ77_RWQPkySWe0OJt3G01UDSOk0qEt3IIkfXzV4o2U2gQhVH8jDk9CKsYwCOI5mTO_xhX1Yy/s717/DSC_0031+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="717" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1HlD30Zln4wzRsCCYE8ip7EcfJaveGo5Kyl_v9CdGM1CLEzEgQ2lbRX7aw-3As2GpzR6VJ77_RWQPkySWe0OJt3G01UDSOk0qEt3IIkfXzV4o2U2gQhVH8jDk9CKsYwCOI5mTO_xhX1Yy/w400-h268/DSC_0031+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: times; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Thus ended the fun part of the year. Our drive home from that trip carried us through some nasty stuff in Oklahoma and through lots of rain in Tennessee. We arrived here at home just in time for an overnight snowfall of several inches.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">We had planned to go to Iowa in May for two graduation ceremonies but those trips got cancelled. Then we were to return in July for our granddaughter's wedding. That also did not happen, much to our dismay. The wedding went forward mostly because they could not change dates or cancel without losing much money in deposits to the venue. Two family gatherings got cancelled, one in May and one in November. Quilt guild activities were cancelled and have not resumed. My husband's bridge games were cancelled and have not resumed. We were supposed to be on our way to Arizona again at the moment but that had to be cancelled also. We just did not want to take the risk. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Thankfully, we are resilient people for the most part. We've spent the year at home mostly, going out for groceries, medical appointments and the walks at the park where we can maintain distance. I did take one short trip for a quilting retreat but it was only after a whole lot of deliberation. So far as I know, everyone who attended was fine. It sure was hard to forego hugs with friends, though. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I have spent most of my time quilting and reading. Thankfully those hobbies can consume many hours. We also enjoy our home and the many birds around us. My husband caught up on some maintenance chores as well. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I won't even go into the turmoil concerning the elections and its not over yet. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I'm truly hoping and praying that 2021 will be a much happier and healthy year for all of us. I'll leave you with the quilting projects I've worked on this year. </span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWXCAu0HDAGbrAuaxUbJeHIH75seaSBAHCjdBuUze39phx_EXF0Zx54LUcflfgnGuvgBEq3l_6QO_rt-CLd3Q2JCv5pCE7DYJjOAGYdrfYrZsYW92qlQs8FHmnTh67eSf8BsmVvydORJWf/s640/20200513_124920_resized+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWXCAu0HDAGbrAuaxUbJeHIH75seaSBAHCjdBuUze39phx_EXF0Zx54LUcflfgnGuvgBEq3l_6QO_rt-CLd3Q2JCv5pCE7DYJjOAGYdrfYrZsYW92qlQs8FHmnTh67eSf8BsmVvydORJWf/s320/20200513_124920_resized+%2528Small%2529.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Finished this one off this year</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijw3PBRzQPEB6qZfEAMl99WKsJFxK5v_a4JpVfUUNgH42pTxbgbLw59Bx8pLcv89x_W0GVggMmTus8tujDae7zi4C3P2ec1GDjU7sG4WKYahA_HiG-tDid_XYTyKPS9dQhK_hd_PFFVP1x/s640/20200711_162514+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijw3PBRzQPEB6qZfEAMl99WKsJFxK5v_a4JpVfUUNgH42pTxbgbLw59Bx8pLcv89x_W0GVggMmTus8tujDae7zi4C3P2ec1GDjU7sG4WKYahA_HiG-tDid_XYTyKPS9dQhK_hd_PFFVP1x/w300-h400/20200711_162514+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">For the high school graduate</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDLecKLSy3-RmgCBmTp-fozp6cxbRuzPZxmdfJsHlk421b0mLFqb7GsWxSHO03UPJWR1OtJIkVk37R6KgWUHPoyU820jsxpIXtlXwVHqvZQ2xbUok3xgwN52iTrxijAuCxYDbSrZB7Clge/s640/20200706_154303+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDLecKLSy3-RmgCBmTp-fozp6cxbRuzPZxmdfJsHlk421b0mLFqb7GsWxSHO03UPJWR1OtJIkVk37R6KgWUHPoyU820jsxpIXtlXwVHqvZQ2xbUok3xgwN52iTrxijAuCxYDbSrZB7Clge/w300-h400/20200706_154303+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><p></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYYWVQHnM66xs12AsjJEnYp-PKsNx5npRm0AYm-918jfOPTaihKpO1GDGmHq0RC68Zt77ZVHyD37L7lF_mweN9JwHx0IZg7abGfpNENaKy3cJmzLqAVPzejhRsao00cZAfaF2Ro6-Vc5vv/s640/20201022_134753+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYYWVQHnM66xs12AsjJEnYp-PKsNx5npRm0AYm-918jfOPTaihKpO1GDGmHq0RC68Zt77ZVHyD37L7lF_mweN9JwHx0IZg7abGfpNENaKy3cJmzLqAVPzejhRsao00cZAfaF2Ro6-Vc5vv/w300-h400/20201022_134753+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS6SlesIOllGuKaZ8fBUwaoMIpOnpLdZyux9yPV0by9c8MPNUo0-dll-w7Z44C4kMglJOhxtmTpmJjVdB2XQtotzFqqum__vJ1yTu4FYotel89qd1YwjwFRILo-cQDhXmJqhZBLvZ8mXTC/s640/20201210_140051+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS6SlesIOllGuKaZ8fBUwaoMIpOnpLdZyux9yPV0by9c8MPNUo0-dll-w7Z44C4kMglJOhxtmTpmJjVdB2XQtotzFqqum__vJ1yTu4FYotel89qd1YwjwFRILo-cQDhXmJqhZBLvZ8mXTC/w300-h400/20201210_140051+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I've also been working on wool applique projects but none are completed as yet. I hope you all are still safe and warm. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">We had a white Christmas here on the hill. It's not unusual for us to get a bit of snow at some point during the winter but this is the first on Christmas since we've lived up here. About 3 1/2 inches total.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikEJrBrm_CojKgfk-7sslbZnS2UN2mvOTzrZKPZHR6JlxO7xJsFFp8mK61g3DkIUgZbaSm2aVr2PVjMwzMDR2kWb8H1oJJskpz_gbyUmvLAQCRP60Yj8HP98TCWpjKWOPkoC0TQmEwGOg3/s640/9700+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikEJrBrm_CojKgfk-7sslbZnS2UN2mvOTzrZKPZHR6JlxO7xJsFFp8mK61g3DkIUgZbaSm2aVr2PVjMwzMDR2kWb8H1oJJskpz_gbyUmvLAQCRP60Yj8HP98TCWpjKWOPkoC0TQmEwGOg3/w300-h400/9700+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><p><br /></p><span style="font-size: large;">Our neighbors walked up the hill past our house to see the view over town with the snow and took this picture near the end of our driveway. </span><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfsoDR3B9u7LlWxCZ1kDVHGI_XMEGkED3JmeM7Ila0x3YJdylvUZUg7VyX2pqPDJUwrAg4aS73JiUSEWHW1I_OWu0hN-j3Tcv5jk370Wxa_cHqBlmrqrOgBPaSs3yfqXpFgYqgEJImjzJP/s640/20201225_105348+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfsoDR3B9u7LlWxCZ1kDVHGI_XMEGkED3JmeM7Ila0x3YJdylvUZUg7VyX2pqPDJUwrAg4aS73JiUSEWHW1I_OWu0hN-j3Tcv5jk370Wxa_cHqBlmrqrOgBPaSs3yfqXpFgYqgEJImjzJP/w400-h300/20201225_105348+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: large;">And this was the view from the porch. Needless to say, with temps no higher than 20 degrees all day and a wind chill in single digits, I went no further toward the outside.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">The birds were really active today. Lots and lots of them vying for space on the feeders. They were all flummoxed by the snow blocking their places to light on the railings. The snow will start melting tomorrow when the temps head up to the 40's and will likely finish off on Sunday. It's really pretty to see it like this but I'm done with it now. It can go away. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">I think all of us are looking forward to 2021 and the hope that it will be better than this year has been. Please stay safe and warm. We will get through it one of these days. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Y'all take care</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></p>Florida Farm Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14788091314337673170noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5118020174438889652.post-33773538636482538542020-12-12T13:10:00.001-05:002020-12-12T13:10:24.753-05:00Covid Woes and Log Cabins <p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"> I am so far behind and downright ashamed of my lack of posting. I love to read posts of other bloggers and it is just not right to leave mine languishing. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I have been pretty much staying at home. Grocery store runs and doctor appointments but not many of those. My little sewing group decided to resume our gatherings at the guest house of one of the group. There's only five of us but with the holidays and increasing covid infection rates, I'm just not comfortable being there any more. So, I've bowed out until such time as I feel things are safer.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">It was my turn to host my siblings' gathering back in mid November and since I'm the youngest of the bunch, we're all getting up in age. One brother recently had a mild heart attack. Given that, and the fact that our May gathering was cancelled, I really wanted to go ahead. We were all set and my husband and I actually drove down to NW Florida in preparation. Upon arriving and overnight during conversations with my brother, the prevalence of covid in the area became quite obvious. Even some extended family members had been exposed. It just became too much for us and after much anguish, on Friday morning I decided to cancel the whole thing. I made those difficult phone calls to my siblings. Some were relieved, I think, and others didn't have much to say about it. At any rate, less than 24 hours after getting there, we got back in the car and headed back home. Even though I wanted to see my siblings, it just wasn't worth the risk to all of us to go ahead. I truly hope that we will be able to resume next May.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I have been sewing and reading, as usual. My most recent finish is my first log cabin style quilt. These have been around forever and there almost endless ways to arrange the blocks. Here is the one that inspired me. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhemZQ3hVNYa58lgCVUR1Veq4Mmr2JnOrA-9m0IsSRREtph_ZEsM53FXj24f3fGL1LLxU0l7eiwjBtebxPloq7-jI-x83XN-mbZ0mrBcLM5q8y1rIp_gzYDGKdcHJGO4QTJUaDJ56GB1_B-/s640/20201208_180345+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhemZQ3hVNYa58lgCVUR1Veq4Mmr2JnOrA-9m0IsSRREtph_ZEsM53FXj24f3fGL1LLxU0l7eiwjBtebxPloq7-jI-x83XN-mbZ0mrBcLM5q8y1rIp_gzYDGKdcHJGO4QTJUaDJ56GB1_B-/w300-h400/20201208_180345+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I pulled out fabrics that I liked and started cutting the "logs". I have been so remiss in not getting another post up to let you see how this quilt turned out. I debated long and hard with myself but finally decided to go to my annual quilting retreat with my buddies from all over the southeastern US and even a couple from Ohio. We've done this for the past ten or eleven years and I haven't missed a one yet. No hugs were shared (bummer), we practiced social distancing for the most part but still had a good time.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Anyway, I worked diligently on this quilt while there and was able to get it stitched together. When I finished the inner part with the tumblers I did something that was totally stupid and I knew better. I half pressed it and then proceeded to attach borders. Well, I found out as I was adding the last piece of the outer border that I had screwed up big time. 😬 I didn't say anything to my pals but figured I'd fix the mess when I got home. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">After looking at it a couple of days, I stopped the procrastination and took the borders off the quilt. I dug out the spray starch and ironed the heck out of the center portion. It got squared up then as best I could. I started re-attaching the borders, some of which I replaced to make it look better. Anyway, here is the final result and I must admit that I'm pleased with the outcome. I had a ton of tumblers left over, probably enough for two or more quilts, but I decided once was enough. I gave the tumblers to Marj who was going to use them to make a quilt for her girly granddaughter. Worked for me and assuaged my guilt by keeping those pieces out of my sight!</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHAQu9_FR75dYSeEorUKten0NojsgXeVF9wZyLvCHq2TGwJBFh8LATR-TGPLA4L6R_rStMZ2yotuyC3rMHqFEDnP-UiDE67nm0pDAjH0ESTnO97qlRb5coRPmfSjPLD7IicaqlEilNbs1I/s640/20201022_134753+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHAQu9_FR75dYSeEorUKten0NojsgXeVF9wZyLvCHq2TGwJBFh8LATR-TGPLA4L6R_rStMZ2yotuyC3rMHqFEDnP-UiDE67nm0pDAjH0ESTnO97qlRb5coRPmfSjPLD7IicaqlEilNbs1I/w300-h400/20201022_134753+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I'm thinking I may put a flannel backing on it to make it all snuggly. Nothing about this is hard but it takes time and perseverance. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I got the strips cut from all the fabrics. I don't know how many different fabrics there are. On most I cut only one strip, a few I cut two and there were a few pieces where I only had partial strips. Oh well, that's the point to make it scrappy.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj525rXt-Lc1cn5rGnEBvYBAx6S7KVjD4L0G-3INc5in9WxKdrH1bJNimJEi3kq0RzqGrQgGpSBoJre6F5E9qoPAoa1_6qk-D39W_cCeiexa8tkD3rDfjgtV0Pa70fwej6pRxxfT77MOB7-/s640/20200907_130239+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj525rXt-Lc1cn5rGnEBvYBAx6S7KVjD4L0G-3INc5in9WxKdrH1bJNimJEi3kq0RzqGrQgGpSBoJre6F5E9qoPAoa1_6qk-D39W_cCeiexa8tkD3rDfjgtV0Pa70fwej6pRxxfT77MOB7-/w400-h300/20200907_130239+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIqlR1sDqkCgSni2WWbsQaIS96eFD3T0u_l-P2iHhS7KiieW_eigrcSuVdt7hzBmHPfOG58P0pZBzcg8-7lDt_HUDqgTf01c35mqu1drNloOvx5SNLzVCT1ELHVW8OHBMYekScxCLtswf0/s640/20200907_112403+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIqlR1sDqkCgSni2WWbsQaIS96eFD3T0u_l-P2iHhS7KiieW_eigrcSuVdt7hzBmHPfOG58P0pZBzcg8-7lDt_HUDqgTf01c35mqu1drNloOvx5SNLzVCT1ELHVW8OHBMYekScxCLtswf0/w300-h400/20200907_112403+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Then the fun part started, cutting all those little tumblers. I do not have a tumbler template and wasn't about to spend over $25 to buy one just for this project. I wandered around and looked in all nooks and crannies to see what I could find to use. TA DA! I found a Dresden plate template/ruler that had never been opened. I pulled it out, figured the size I wanted my tumblers and used painters' tape to mark the size for easy reference. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiURVnyBnxdQDfi5n-sbDZv5vNQtRUnaA_jJMj0QumHqYkmultTdCQ1AawE7ctR_USU96IPuRoCSvHNpKuLOG753m6gSW_kZjm6Z_4Y0Yw2eNLr1mETX5gruXLoQYw1nsswEXwrJ9tph_JN/s640/20200907_130712+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiURVnyBnxdQDfi5n-sbDZv5vNQtRUnaA_jJMj0QumHqYkmultTdCQ1AawE7ctR_USU96IPuRoCSvHNpKuLOG753m6gSW_kZjm6Z_4Y0Yw2eNLr1mETX5gruXLoQYw1nsswEXwrJ9tph_JN/w300-h400/20200907_130712+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /><span style="font-size: large;">I simply cut in one direction, flip the ruler around and cut the other piece, continuing until the strip is cut.</span></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">It was my idea to simply toss the tumblers into a plastic bin and then pull them as they came to sew them. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJkpcEf5CmC9VbNa6XJFeLO2J0kI0EBx3tuV809V5JyTVgVi3V0bWAWurwc4QyIEu57tvEMVLQnHaS3vz0yb9V9YFBz0_Hyk89lWNBTS7wFSEgUEdcGJHMZ0vHnTi6AbAl6TQhPt3xU9O/s640/20200916_125241+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJkpcEf5CmC9VbNa6XJFeLO2J0kI0EBx3tuV809V5JyTVgVi3V0bWAWurwc4QyIEu57tvEMVLQnHaS3vz0yb9V9YFBz0_Hyk89lWNBTS7wFSEgUEdcGJHMZ0vHnTi6AbAl6TQhPt3xU9O/w400-h300/20200916_125241+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">One of those ideas that worked better in concept than in execution. Since I was cutting strips of double fabric there were always two pieces stuck together and also a number of cuts lying together. So I sat for a while and separated the tumblers into separate piles so that they could be mixed up. When finished, I added them back to the bin in different orders and then stirred them up. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I sat down to start the sewing. Again, the idea works but execution is a little more difficult. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRi0QM6ziB2WjNyr8Li2SLx2xM86a7P4E_JSlO-k6CAPiIdn75oaxtIcNgX9OOE_0s4KK6Zro-u1XR0zIJM1-pFwfukwvpbXin-qeZhUiEBAW1_bzsMHOjxSf5Gq4iP26teDhHytjzpspv/s640/20200916_130956+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRi0QM6ziB2WjNyr8Li2SLx2xM86a7P4E_JSlO-k6CAPiIdn75oaxtIcNgX9OOE_0s4KK6Zro-u1XR0zIJM1-pFwfukwvpbXin-qeZhUiEBAW1_bzsMHOjxSf5Gq4iP26teDhHytjzpspv/w300-h400/20200916_130956+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Yeah, I had to fix that one but it was a learning process. I saw a quilt lying on wildflowers in a field recently on a blog. I fell in love with the concept and the idea. I believe that lady made hexagons like a Grandmother's Flower Garden but I have no interest in paper piecing like that. My idea was to make a mini tumbler quilt using 30's reproduction fabrics.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">The first thing to do, since there is no real pattern for this, is to try to figure out how many tumblers I will need. I think I've got it right but we'll see. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCRpQ0YYBB06YGkK-hyW5BUInZ16zONCNRk_hZGHDpLXDhp7pJRhhqq-x6xgkSH1M4CA0KPOwf8elfRzyUVrxLUjhsV4hUAZI_U_ZZJyPM-YDygGkszLGbmBzMo4YRsBZFPwmg-elAfC6U/s640/20200830_144413+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCRpQ0YYBB06YGkK-hyW5BUInZ16zONCNRk_hZGHDpLXDhp7pJRhhqq-x6xgkSH1M4CA0KPOwf8elfRzyUVrxLUjhsV4hUAZI_U_ZZJyPM-YDygGkszLGbmBzMo4YRsBZFPwmg-elAfC6U/s0/20200830_144413+%2528Small%2529.jpg" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: large;">We start with scribbles and figures which may or may not be correct but its a starting point. </span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Then is the selection of fabrics. I simply went over to the cabinet and pulled out just about all the 30's reproduction fabrics I have, along with some others for neutrals. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz5DTgZ54YKhhtQCS7PhKAr6jYGu-e6neuFr8ZVDRHCNXDN_8MVrScWaH3pmKZ7SPthXarxsZUB0WJTtHPBhN7LzXyX-MDtAeES1LklDgxT78Owo9x9cL35_lplXYuUTB3bW7ncDyksPVF/s640/20200830_143455+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz5DTgZ54YKhhtQCS7PhKAr6jYGu-e6neuFr8ZVDRHCNXDN_8MVrScWaH3pmKZ7SPthXarxsZUB0WJTtHPBhN7LzXyX-MDtAeES1LklDgxT78Owo9x9cL35_lplXYuUTB3bW7ncDyksPVF/s0/20200830_143455+%2528Small%2529.jpg" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: large;">I'll just cut strips from them and then cut the little tumblers. </span><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWt8fdLG5sB7bt2Id3Fk7QsoGNN-jQI7gwRCRLvw4iQwSbuo9eBBAdVdrr8g7RAONNfyEbWJKBWrigCiDjce9m1W-LT-NGbwLgYaDTiEux9zHBUxQryakrfbvgJVUuQ1qao9QVUFODdU0F/s640/20200830_144444+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWt8fdLG5sB7bt2Id3Fk7QsoGNN-jQI7gwRCRLvw4iQwSbuo9eBBAdVdrr8g7RAONNfyEbWJKBWrigCiDjce9m1W-LT-NGbwLgYaDTiEux9zHBUxQryakrfbvgJVUuQ1qao9QVUFODdU0F/s0/20200830_144444+%2528Small%2529.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">So, that's where we stand at the moment. All these months of the covid pandemic have taken their toll on all of us. I know that at times I am frustrated, sad, stressed, lonely and just plain unhappy. Then at other times it doesn't seem to bother me so much. My brother and I were talking yesterday and we both agreed that many of us Americans have for way too long had the ability to do as we please when we please. We have become truly spoiled with having the ability to indulge our wants and whims. This time of restriction can teach us a valuable lesson. If our true needs are met (food, shelter, clothing, safety), then all our wants can be adjusted and modified if we will but make the effort. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">I am a quilter. I have a room full of fabrics, tools, patterns and every other implement that I need or want to indulge my expensive hobby. Yet, I find myself being unsatisfied at times and at a loss as to how to occupy myself. Isn't that pathetic? I'm relatively healthy, have every need met and 99.9% of my wants met, so how can I possibly be unsatisfied? I just shake my head at myself sometimes. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Now, on to something more cheerful. During this period of uncertainty, I cleaned up my sewing room. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5jw1k8nwEvamhdBWTly8Iz9Ilmvya4Jbl5MsyTYoCeeewcByikknBigoIBeWdCnCKO918qYYnMdR83KAvb_NMNfiE-HdQIoE4x7MJtNe0kWJ6hQy5bDv6V87d2QlXNHg77zMJgxiJSYYL/s640/20200825_135226+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: times;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5jw1k8nwEvamhdBWTly8Iz9Ilmvya4Jbl5MsyTYoCeeewcByikknBigoIBeWdCnCKO918qYYnMdR83KAvb_NMNfiE-HdQIoE4x7MJtNe0kWJ6hQy5bDv6V87d2QlXNHg77zMJgxiJSYYL/w512-h384/20200825_135226+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="512" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /><span style="font-size: large;">You won't see that cutting table empty like that too often. Way beyond my capabilities because in reality I know zip, nada, zilch about electronics. I put it back together and then proceeded to do something I know how to do. I found a used one on dBay just like it and promptly bought it. Should be here in a day or so. Nifty, huh?</span></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">My husband and I try to go walking several times a week at our local park which is about 30+ acres with the lovely Butternut Creek and Notteley River running through it. I'm so glad I captured the sight because the next time I was at the park the sculpture was gone and the dam totally rearranged. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Just another one of those lessons about appreciating what we have when we have it. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: large;">Y'all take care of yourselves. A post finally<p> <span style="font-family: times; font-size: x-large;">At last! You finally get another post from me. I've been busy working on a wool applique project and have been enjoying it immensely. It is tedious but fun. So here we go with some pretties. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW8GPyn5BHhhNxKX1ysZyOGDhFFBq142uLiJvbzqKiXYalbTVnO3bi1Re_2rVFrW3lYnqMlli1Dc6fb3PamcwSVNx4CsaAkoB9GuXr2W6I-dmhvf1f8FNp6WxLUgAmYaLqHTKMRKfiDTiB/s640/20200808_094901+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="display: block; Summertime has arrived in the mountains. We had such a lovely June weather wise. Now, the humidity has crept in along with higher temperatures. Oh well, we'll survive. Just talked to my sister earlier down in NW Florida and they've had temps and heat indexes up above 100. I can hardly imagine with the humidity down there. I told her that was one of the the primary reasons we moved away from there. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">We've been saying home pretty much. We go over to the park for a walk fairly often but we are able to avoid other people well enough. It does the heart good to walk along the creek and hear the water. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">I've been sewing pretty steadily. I have the graduation quilt all done and ready to go in the mail. I really like how it turned out and hope Josie will like it. </span><span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAOMC0qfLNIqo2IT-3K_y9J2MeLMlYyBJP8kp3cFtugjERy2JQVCSaKIznUnKVpSbF0XaKJ5TNNpaulyFHG57TqMmIHrHgyeG48xMj23t68LL4l59lkKQCptM8qMvhTRK-Aoc2_u-Ejbeb/s640/20200711_162514+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAOMC0qfLNIqo2IT-3K_y9J2MeLMlYyBJP8kp3cFtugjERy2JQVCSaKIznUnKVpSbF0XaKJ5TNNpaulyFHG57TqMmIHrHgyeG48xMj23t68LL4l59lkKQCptM8qMvhTRK-Aoc2_u-Ejbeb/w400-h300/20200711_162514+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">In addition, I started and finished the top for another quilt. Don't know when I'll get it quilted. I loved these colors together. You may need to enlarge the photo to properly see the striped fabric. </span><div><span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix7nZNSzIPqbD86a95HQ68qH20oKrhihGVW4caANSVMre6b_imt4gChDDcymzRUmYLgdGsNwvIDJ056UmyUFBC5dp7hxGWbgswWWq1mmodGX9ByHs5mV6gdKdv1wxnq2-VS6Nq62Btrl09/s640/20200706_154303+%2528Small%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix7nZNSzIPqbD86a95HQ68qH20oKrhihGVW4caANSVMre6b_imt4gChDDcymzRUmYLgdGsNwvIDJ056UmyUFBC5dp7hxGWbgswWWq1mmodGX9ByHs5mV6gdKdv1wxnq2-VS6Nq62Btrl09/w300-h400/20200706_154303+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">I've gone back to working on the Oh, Christmas tree wool applique pattern. <span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I'm in the middle of a quilting project and I'm excited about it. I don't think I've been this pumped up about a project in a very long time. Many, many years ago I bought some fabric at the Quilted Moose in Gretna, Nebraska (I believe it was) that was diagonal striped fabric. Fell in love with it so I bought the fabric and a number of coordinating pieces. They have been stored together since then. When I was trying to decide what I wanted to stitch on next, I pulled out that fabric and decided that was it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I chose a very traditional pattern shown in homespuns and dark fabrics. Not in the same universe as my fabrics. Got it figured out and blocks laid out ready to stitch together. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">We're getting rain almost every day and can I say I'm tired of it? Yeah, I know. Once it stops I'll be begging for rain. I've been seeing bloggers who have already switched to the new Blogger format and are not happy with it. Figured I'd better get aboard and see what the fuss is about. Besides, I'm way behind on posting anyway. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">My days go by so fast. They all seem to be duplicates of the one before so much that I'm tempted to call them all Ground Hog's Day. I went on one social outing to my sewing group where we all pretty much sit far apart anyway. It was good to see the girls again but don't know if we'll do it again. Since more things have opened up here in Georgia, our little county shot up from about 30 cases to nearly 60 cases with an additional death. Of course, folks from the Atlanta metro area and Florida and other places are coming up now, so that expands the risk for our residents. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">I've been over to the park only once in the past several months. I missed most of the flowers there. The mountain laurel was still blooming but the rhododendrum and native azaleas were already done. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">The creek was running beautifully though. It is a lovely park and it was a factor in our choice of places to live. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">My husband had hernia repair surgery at the end of May and is doing well in his recovery. The first week or so he was pretty sedentary but he's now feeling much better and wanting to do things. I have to ride herd on him sometimes due to his tendency to overdo things, even when his health is normal. He still thinks he's 50 years old and he's not.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">We've had a lot of rain this past winter and spring and the woods around us are so thick and lush. I love all the shades of green and all the shapes of the various leaves and plants. Just wish some of those plants wouldn't grow where I don't want them, if you know what I mean! Pulling weeds is a constant job and it can get away from you easily. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">I'm having lovely flowers this year. I finally got my hydrangea to grow and look like its supposed to. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The asters are blooming out more every day and the crocosmia will be doing its thing shortly. My knockout roses had a glorious first wave. They are putting out buds and will be waving proudly soon. I try to keep them going until the fall and they will do that if I can remember to keep them fed on time.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now, if I could get deck plants to look as good I'd be pleased. One thing I'm not pleased about is how quickly the landscaping timbers on the above bed have deteriorated. This bed was put in place in 2015 I think it was and some of the timbers have already rotted. We have a carpenter/contractor coming soon for some other work and hope I can get them to do repairs on these beds as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This covid 19 virus has us all in turmoil. Our lives have been rearranged without our permission and it all takes some getting used to. It makes me wonder what normal will look like going forward. I know we've cancelled a number of plans due to it, including attendance at our granddaughter's wedding which is out of state. My husband just does not feel safe taking the risk, considering his age and health issues. It breaks our hearts not to go. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I hope all of you stay safe and as happy as you can be. </span><br />

The staying home due to the Covid19 virus thing is getting old. One day looks just like another and it is so easy to lose track of what day it is. There are no "events" to mark the passing of the days and weeks. Of course, if I look in the mirror at my hair I can certainly tell it's been a long time since a haircut! Poor hubby is looking a bit shaggy too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Anyway, I've been sewing still. I did the hand sewing on the binding of a quilt that I started years ago. I got the pattern underway only to discover there were errors in the pattern. These errors caused some recalculation and figuring. It never crossed my mind to check online for any pattern corrections before starting. I mean, don't these pattern designers have pattern testers? The only pattern designers I know had several and no pattern ever got published before being made by the testers first. I was so annoyed with this whole thing that the quilt got put on the back burner and ignored. I would drag the wool applique part of it along sometimes and work on it but with no real enthusiasm. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">A while back I decided that it was time to come off the shelf. I pulled up the BGP's and finished it. So, here it is. I still love the thing. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I've also been finishing up the ten little birds for the wool applique project. They are tedious little things but I have really enjoyed making them. The work area while doing this is a bit interesting, though. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-VreT7cQfnHySzkmQQZcpsqc3IvDg3wEEepHv2ko1B10uNynHk393m4-Uht4H9xwdAgpl2c-xzbcAHegcUI2FYkaj-vDTdiiwr97E_E-BCb1x07O9LlK4OwB3X1k-SWAXHqqhnMDw79c6/s1600/20200429_115112+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-VreT7cQfnHySzkmQQZcpsqc3IvDg3wEEepHv2ko1B10uNynHk393m4-Uht4H9xwdAgpl2c-xzbcAHegcUI2FYkaj-vDTdiiwr97E_E-BCb1x07O9LlK4OwB3X1k-SWAXHqqhnMDw79c6/s400/20200429_115112+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">All the little guys are done except for fastening the beak of one. That will take only a few minutes and then it will be on to the multi-layered flowers. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Speaking of flowers, my knockout roses are doing the best I think they've done since we've lived here. They are gorgeous. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The rain and accompanying wind did a number on them a bit because the blossoms were so heavy but they are hanging in there. I've been sewing, of course. I got a graduation quilt top off to the longarm quilter several days ago and can now work on other stuff. My applique group is doing a group project called "Oh, Christmas Tree" by Wendy Williams. We are each doing our own version but working on them concurrently. We are all at different stages because we work on other things too. Here are the little birdies I'm working on. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">We have had rain off and on and I am so over it. Sunshine today but cool and breezy. May 1 and the heat is still on. I'm truly hoping that ceases to be the case really soon. </span><br />

Anyway, on to more of our travels way back in January. Who knew? Anyway, one of our outings as a family group was to the <a href="https://www.btarboretum.org/">Boyce Thompson Arboretum</a>. We arrived in late morning which is not the best time but it took us a bit over an hour to drive there. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Anyway, we all split off and went our own way along the numerous trails. The arboretum has distinct groups showing desert habitat from all over the world with plants indigenous to those areas.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I didn't pay a lot of attention to which country the areas represented although I probably should have. There were some very interesting cacti from all over the world, of course.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I though I would never forget the name of this tree because it was so unique but I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I am a birder. Therefore I was as interested in any new birds that I might see as in the plants. The Anna's hummingbird was gorgeous and there were several of them feeding and flying around feeders hung in the trees. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">After a nice walk, we all reconvened at the picnic area for lunch which the kids had provided. Wonderful stuff. We then all headed out again on other walks. By this time, it was getting warm out and we were happy to return to the car and head home. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I highly recommend a visit to this place if you are ever in the Phoenix area. It is east of the metro area near a little town of Superior, Arizona. There is lots of shade and places to sit and take it all in or rest. There's lots of info about it at the website above. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The past few days here on the hill have passed in a blur. I came down with a severe stomach virus and was laid low. Then just as I'm starting to feel a bit better, my husband is hit with it. I'm still not out of the woods and he certainly isn't. I guess this nasty thing has been hitting our community very hard according to a doctor's staff. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">There's been a lot going on in my world since you heard from me so you may get bits and pieces over time. Other than the above, its all been pretty good stuff. I'll do my best to get caught up but have some things that must be done today in prep for a meeting tomorrow. I'm the first VP of the quilt guild and the president has to be out of town for medical appointments so I need to conduct the meeting tomorrow in addition to handling my normal duties as membership chair. Got to get materials ready.</span><br />

We're in Fountain Hills, Arizona for a bit and the time has been flying by. Two sets of the "kids" are here also. One set lives here and the other set is snowbirding for a while. We've been enjoying the time and activities we share together. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I've been birding a bit since a lot of the birds here are new to me. Been doing my best but its like starting over as a new birder when you go to a new area. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Mere days after returning from the Jekyll Island birding trip I headed off to Houston for the International Quilt Festival for the first time. That's one of the holy grail type events for quilters world over. My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Icon in downtown Houston. It is an old bank converted to a hotel and only blocks from Minute Maid Field where the last game of the world series took place the night we arrived. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">I had my first experience of using Uber to get from IAH to the hotel and it was a good experience. So was the return trip. Both vehicles were nice and clean and the drivers were very careful. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">As any quilter knows, the Houston show is a humongous vendor mall with a quilt show attached! Not really, but it does seem that way at times. We started our visit by heading to the vendors and spent hours working our way up one aisle and down the other, contributing to the economy as we went. It is amazing to see so many quilting tools and supplies in one place. It's also a good way to see new products and how they are used. As we headed out for the day, we stopped at the parcel desk and had them pack up and ship a box home for us. Next day we were considerably more restrained and simply took those purchases back with us to the hotel. Of course, I had stuffed another bag into my suitcase "just in case", you know. It did come in handy when we were packing up to come home. I wound up with some of my friend's clothing in the extra space in my suitcase and we split our purchases between our carry on bags. We began our viewing of the quilts that day as well and returned on Saturday to spend the day looking at quilts. I truly did enjoy the trip but its one of those things that once done doesn't appeal to me much any more. We'll see. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">One of my favorite moments came when we visited the Material Obsessions booth and met Australian designer Wendy Williams. I love her patterns and have several. I'm actually working on one of them right now. What a treat to see the designers themselves in the booth interacting with the customers rather than someone hired to do it for them. Wendy, Kathy Doughty and John Doughty were a refreshing treat. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Needless to say, we walked our legs off every day and returned to the hotel totally beat. Thankfully our hotel shuttle picked us up and delivered us right back to the hotel door whenever we wanted them. The next order of business after delivering our packages to our room was a tall glass of wine. I found and enjoyed a cabernet sauvignon which I believe was called Stonybrook. I'm still on the trail trying to track it down sufficiently that I can have a local beverage supply house order it for me. I plan to call the hotel bar and ask since the admin offices haven't responded to my email inquiry. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Enough for now. There's more to be shared soon. Y'all take care. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It's been a pretty busy time around here, at least for me. Our guild's biannual quilt show was held September 27-28 and I was kept busy from Tuesday of that week right through Saturday. I was a worker bee for the quilt intake and judging which took two days. Then on Thursday I helped transport the quilts to the show venue and work on setup. The show started on Friday. I worked admissions on Saturday and then helped some with takedown. It was a busy week. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I entered three quilts and one of them won a second place ribbon in its class. </span><br />

Working with all those aboriginal prints and colors at one time was a real step outside my comfort zone. It's a big quilt so the top is folded over the hanger rod. The second quilt is all hand applique. I machine stitched the blocks together of course. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I started the quilt several years ago and used it as my means to learn how to do needle turn applique. Just let me say that it was a journey that I'm still traveling. This quilt was not judged, just displayed. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Then, four days after the show ended, I headed over to Smith Lake near Cullman, Alabama for a quilting retreat. Ladies come from several states for this retreat and I haven't missed one since the retreat began in late 2010 or early 2011. Can't remember. At any rate, it was 4 1/2 days of fun and sewing. The only picture I took was of the quilt top that I made while there. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Again, the picture doesn't do the colors justice. The tan is much richer than it shows here. I arrived back home on October 6. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">On October 11 I drove down to Jekyll Island, Georgia to attend the Georgia Ornothological Society's meeting and do some coastal birding. I had never been to the Georgia coast so it was interesting to compare it to the other coastal birding I've done along the Gulf coast. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">We had a good turnout for the event and several days of birding. I had met a few of the attendees at an earlier meeting but didn't really know anyone there. The one fellow I knew who had planned to attend had to drop out at the last minute so I just headed on out by myself. Our banquet speaker was Kenn Kaufman and he was a delight to be around. The event was held at Villas by the Sea. I drove back home on Monday, October 14, after a short outing to Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">All this activity and traveling simply wore me out! I was one tired puppy at that point and spent the next several days just resting up. I had no ambition to do much of anything. At this point I've had a couple of weeks of recovery but I'm off again on Wednesday for another adventure. That'll be for another day. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Thank you again for sticking with me. I do appreciate it. Y'all take care. </span><br />

I've been up to my usual doings here on the hill. Summer is truly here and we're having our hottest weather of the year. It's still a lot cooler than a lot of folks so we don't complain too much. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Hubby has been walking at Meeks Park most every day and I go every other day. It was a little warm and with the humidity we worked up a good sweat. It's still a gorgeous place, though.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Tonight there will be a movie night at the park with free snow cones, popcorn and hotdogs. The movie will be Charlotte's Web. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I've been prepping a new needle turn applique project and am just now starting the stitching. It's a gorgeous pattern and I hope to do it justice. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Back in April when family members were here, I had a quilt hanger put in the master bedroom. Right now it has my pig quilt on it because it happened to be the one I grabbed at the time. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Its about time to change it out for something different. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I've also canned some green beans that I bought from our friend who has a booth at the farmers' market. I wound up with 21 pints of green beans. They are so much better than anything you can buy at the grocery store. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">We have unfortunately had some visitors we didn't want. This hornet nest was attached to the bottom of a shelf under the leanto back of our garage. This one was over 12 inches long from the shelf to the bottom. It had to go which is sad. The nests are so gorgeous. Some folks use the vacant nests as part of their country/ mountain decor. Normally you see them up in trees. </span><br />

We're having days of high 80's with higher than usual humidity. Oh well, this too will pass soon. At least we're not looking at months of hot, humid weather. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It's that time of year when fresh vegetables are becoming more available. I picked up some fresh bicolor corn and tomatoes at the farmers' market yesterday and we had them for dinner last night. I sprinkled sea salt from the Camargue coast of France on them and it was delicious. I discovered this wonderful Fleur de Sel while having lunch at a ranch in the Camargue where we saw the black bulls famous for the French style of bullfighting. No bulls are injured in this style and they can go on to live long happy lives after retiring from the ring. </span><br />

I'm back home again. I took a trip to France with my friend and while it was enjoyable I am SO glad to be back home in my own little world.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">We spent three days in Paris before our river cruise playing tourist. I'd been to Paris before but my friend had not, otherwise I would have skipped it this trip. Anyway, there were a couple of snafus but all in all was a good trip. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Obviously, one cannot get close to Notre Dame now. It is blocked off with armed guards.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The yellow vest protesters were active on the Saturday we were there and, in fact, moved down the street in front of our hotel but we were at the Eiffel Tower at the time so did not see them. Have you ever thought of the subway system in any larger city? It boggles my mind how they are designed, built and operate so well. All the time underground and out of sight. Mostly it was good, but due to a breakdown on the line we were on, we did miss a tour for which we had tickets already. Let's hope I can get a refund, but I'm not holding my breath. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It's always an adventure in European hotels to see how things work. Bathroom fixtures don't always look like we expect. Took us a while to figure out the faucet but we got there. Didn't like it though.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">However, I did like the tiramisu. An Italian restaurant just a few doors down from our hotel had really good food, including the tiramisu which was scooped from the dish and served onto your plate. We ate there only once but I did stop in again just to pick up tiramisu to take back to the hotel. Good stuff. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I'll be back soon with more adventures. Meanwhile, y'all take care. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">At the moment, I'm not doing much sewing. But I did get two quilts finished earlier. One is made from Australian fabrics and is way out of my comfort zone with all the patterns and colors used together. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs2qewZu9aNXgw-RPmcJJGdjpmQqsnHYRe2Xaptfe4HcuAwpWNhltIZGhukZ1CfVWdedsZNEiChVSjy3hB9N9mNIwGuy_-P5SENAMBSOKHgcNimryFNRjrhT9x3uM7l3c-ul7MVHKBWBeL/s1600/Australian+quilt+%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="853" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs2qewZu9aNXgw-RPmcJJGdjpmQqsnHYRe2Xaptfe4HcuAwpWNhltIZGhukZ1CfVWdedsZNEiChVSjy3hB9N9mNIwGuy_-P5SENAMBSOKHgcNimryFNRjrhT9x3uM7l3c-ul7MVHKBWBeL/s400/Australian+quilt+%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Its simply a variation of a log cabin block and very easy to sew. There are eight sets of 3 fabrics used for the blocks. There is a total of 26 different fabrics in the quilt. I bought the kit in Oregon where I attended the Sisters Quilt Show last July. They provided fabric and the pattern but I had to choose the fabric combinations. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">This next quilt is all hand applique, except for piecing the blocks together and the actual quilting. I saw this quilt at a show in Springfield, Missouri a number of years ago. I had decided I wanted to learn how to do needle turn applique and figured that by the time I finished this quilt I'd be pretty good at it. It has taken me at least three years to do this quilt, working on a block at a time. I did not work exclusively on this quilt but wove it in among my other projects. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The quilt is called Across the Wide Missouri. It was lots of work but I really enjoyed making it. I learned a lot and still have a lot more to learn to be more than what I think is just adequate doing applique. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It has been busy around here. We had company for two weeks and the "kids" were kept busy with honey-do projects. Before they came, they all requested a list of chores they could do for us. I got a garage door opener at last, along with a lot of other chores that hubby and I just could not tackle for various reasons. I don't think they'd know how to act if there was not a chore list for them upon arrival. </span><br />
